Camping Review of Boyd Lake State Park CampgroundBoyd Lake State park is a popular camping destination north of Denver along the front range. Boyd Lake is a large and heavily used lake in the center of the city of Loveland. It can fill to capacity on warm days and the campground is full throughout most of the summer season. If you are looking to vacation here, make sure to make reservations early and be ready to be flexible should your ideal camp site be taken. Most of the camp sites here are very similar and can accommodate RV’s, campers and tents. There are full services in this campground so you don’t have to “rough it” while enjoying the great outdoors. Much of this lake is only accessible by boat or foot trail so be ready to walk or boat your way to the part of the lake you wish to enjoy.

Boyd Lake State Park Camping Review

Boyd Lake is a large lake running north to south in the heart of Loveland, Colorado. This lake is known as one of the best water sports lakes in Northern Colorado. The entrance is on the west side of the lake, and the road accessibility is in the middle on the western side. The rest of the lake is reachable only by trail or by boat.

There are quite a few campsites at Boyd Lake, compressed into a fairly small area. The campsites are evenly spaced and are similar to each other. They have power and paved driveways. The campground itself can be fairly quiet during the day because most people will be out on their boats. The trees here are sparse, which lends to the open campground feeling.

Camping Review of Boyd Lake State Park Campground - PlaygroundEach of the campgrounds has a play area for the kids. Several of these areas have only swings where others have full playgrounds sets. There are horseshoe pits and wide open grassy areas at the outskirts of each of these loops so you can pass the time between boating outings.

Within walking distance of the campground is a very large public swim beach, along with a few shops, concession stands, and an open grassy park with picnic areas. There’s also a good play area  for the kids and a nice trail for walks around the area.

If you enjoy hiking or biking there are also many trails you can take that explore the area. There are a great way to see more of the park and allow a chance at some wildlife viewing. Make sure to take your camera on these trails as there is a good variety of wildlife that inhabits the park.

Camping Review of Boyd Lake State Park Campground - MarinaThere’s a small marina to accommodate all the boating enthusiasts. As with other state Parks, there is a boat inspection before you can take your boat into the water to make sure your boat doesn’t have any zebra clams, mussels, or other invasive species.

With so little of the lake shoreline accessible by road, if you don’t mind a little walking, you can probably find a place along the shore. Since this is a popular boating lake, it can get quite noisy here during the peak of the season. If you enjoy boating , this is definitely a place you want to check out.

The camping area could also serve as a great “home base” should you want to explore other areas of the region. Estes Park and a national forest lie to the east of Loveland. If you have the time to explore these areas, I would definitely recommend it.

  • Camp Showers

I have never been to Boyd Lake State Park, but I see that the amenities are showers. Being that this is a public place and I assume that the maintenance of the showers may not be a priority, I think that it would be a good idea for people who have pop-up tents to have their own portable water heating source. Just in case the showers are not up to par when you arrive.
