The holidays are coming to a close and the year is almost over. The snow is deep and camping season is still months away. It may not seem like it, but now is the time to plan your camping trips and if you are going someplace that has reservations, now is the time to get them!
It may be hard to even think about camping when there is snow everywhere and the highs down on the plains for the day are in the 20s. At least for all the sane campers that try to avoid the snow! To those that are out there now, stay warm! However, the cold weather campers that like to camp in the snow don’t have the problems that most campers have: fighting for campgrounds and campsites they want during the peak of summer camping season.
Even if it’s hard, it’s time to think about your camping trips for the year. Many campgrounds in Colorado accept camping reservations up to 6 months in advance. Many places are already taking reservations. In fact, I have already reserved several campsites for 2012. If you are particular about where and when you want to camp now is the time to get those sites locked in.
It’s a very bad idea to head up during peak camping season to popular campgrounds with the expectation of finding a campsite, especially if you plan to go camping during the prime days of Friday through Sunday. You might have more of a chance if you plan your trips to for weekdays. But even then, the prime campsites may have been snatched up months before you even arrive.
It is also a great idea to get the camping trips planned out so that your friends and family can join you on these great camping excursions. It’s great to be out in the Colorado wilderness camping, but it is always better with friends and family camping in the campsites next to you!
Many campers have to schedule their vacation months ahead of time. If you can get a camping schedule out to those that you want to camp with during the summer now, they can align their other vacations and time off from work with these camping trips. It has been my experience as someone who has camped in Colorado for over 30 years that the more people you have on a camping trip, the more fun everyone seems to have!
So if you plan on going camping in 2012, it’s time to lock in those times, dates and campgrounds so you can be assured to get the campsites you want.
